Everyday and Echoes

To carry the century-long history and memory of a sake store in Hayama-Manase into the future, we created a sustainable space that addresses regional challenges such as depopulation and aging, while coexisting harmoniously with nature. The R-shaped counter and exposed beams were designed to foster both conversation and a sense of time accumulated within the space. The plastered walls in mimatsu green and flooring made from locally sourced crushed seashells reflect and resonate with the surrounding Hayama landscape.
For the façade, fully openable fittings and a terrace finished with Mino-yaki tiles blur the boundary between inside and outside, creating an open space where the sea breeze flows through. In addition, locally sourced thinned wood was used for furniture, and natural materials were incorporated into artworks, embedding both a cyclical use of resources and a poetic atmosphere into the space. The former sake shop has been reimagined as a contemporary community hub—one where history, environment, and people gently intersect.
